A non-technical friend was recently looking at a stack of books next to me, and thumbed through one of those WROX books of some 1700 pages, I think on C# and .NET 3.5 and said something like "Hell, do you have to know all this stuff?" It was difficult to articulate to him that whilst it provides a solid fundamental overview of the language, it barely scratches the surface of the specific technologies covered... AJAX, WPF, WCF.. etc.

I always feel slightly like a kid in a candy store when it comes to .NET. There is so much that turns me on, but as you say so little time.

My own gut feeling is that there will be an increasing demand for highly skilled specialists. For example, after figuring enough WCF to solve a specific need, my opinion at the end was that if I was managing a team of in-house programmers on some more serious project, I'd have either needed to source extremely good and targetted training, or outsourced that specific area of development to skilled contractors. Some of this stuff has enough learning curves and pitfalls that I just don't think it is any longer time/cost effective to be trying to "cover the field".

Anyway, I know I have been around HTML and XML too long. When I hit the </Rant></Digression> part of your post, I automatically scrolled up to look for the beginning tags .... ;)

Good post! Should be the starting point for people coming into the technology. I know I have been overwhelmed with the flood of technology increase over the last two years. But have really been loving it as the field is move along and giving us far more power.

for me, just start to learn vs 2003 in 2005 and then try very hard to catch the new technologies like vs 2005, 2008 and have to take a look at PWF, Silverlight and now MVC, Dynamic Data and other technologies.

if they have a policy or rule for release new technologies like 2 years or 4 years a time so that developer can have enough time to learn right.

Excellent idea

The last time I stayed really in the loop was in 2004 when I was writing my book, through the .NET 2.0 alpha and beta days. Since then, I try to keep up with the public stuff and what's going on under NDA, but there just aren't enough hours in the day. I love the idea of MVC, for example, but I decided early on to just let it go final before spending a lot of time with it. Even Silverlight 2 has been neglected, though I've firmly jumped in during the last two months.

If I can only get the HTML bridge stuff to work right! :)
