So here’s the debate: can the videos we do be made better in post production, and yet produced quickly and efficiently

re: Better Videos

Another option worth considering is Shure's X2U XLR to USB microphone adapter which allows you to use your favourite XLR microphone with your computer.

Blue microphones do a similar product called the 'Icicle', but it lacks the peak level indicator of the X2U. It's about a third of the price however.

Some people prefer using a lavalier clip-on microphone as it doesn't tend to get in the way of the screen like a large studio condensor mic can. They also can help avoid the annoying 'plosiv's' you get with incorrectly placed microphones or microphones without pop shields. The Audio Technica AT831B (or AT831R as the USB adaptors provide phantom power) or equivalent may suit them better.

If your voice varies a lot in level (often applies to excitable people) then you may find that you need to use a basic audio compressor between the mic and the computer so as to compress the loud bursts whilst keeping sufficient input level for the encoder to work with.

If you can't seem to get your head around Adobe Premiere on the PC, then you might find Sony Vegas a lot more intuitive.

A very good choice of tools indeed, I just need to learn how to use Premier and After Effects effectively (no pun intended).

Also, the package comes with Adobe Encoder, which, if you know what settings to tweak, can easily create video in a format that Silverlight 2 can use. In fact, I've used the XAML for Silverlight add-in on Adobe Illustrator and Expression Blend 2 SP1 (which BTW, is only $99 for licensed Visual Studio users) to animate it.

Cheers!
